Harley Odean Hanson, 78, passed away on Friday, Oct. 14, at the Arizona Veteran's Home in Phoenix.
He was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Roland to Alma and Otto Hanson. Harley graduated from Luther College in Decorah with a math degree. After serving in the Korean War in the Army and Navy, Harley began his teaching career in Iowa. Harley was always very active in church and loved to sing in the choir. He met and married Lavina H. Geiszler, from Ashley, N.D., in 1954. Harley and Lavina raised four children in Ames, during which time he worked at the DOT and continued to enjoy his family, the outdoors and his involvement with the church. Harley and Lavina retired and moved to Arizona. They spent the last 12 years in Apache Wells, actively volunteering in the community, remodeling buildings, woodworking and making jewelry. He participated in Sons of Norway and Good Samaritan Organization and Victory Lutheran Church. During his time at the VA Home, Harley was able to enjoy has favorite pasttime of fishing. His gentle spirit and good humor and faith will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl in 2002. His survivors include his wife, Lavina Hanson; three children; two brothers; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., today, Hansen Chapel of Prayer, 108 N. 56th St., Mesa, Ariz. Graveside service will be held at 9 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 19, national Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, followed by memorial services at 2 p.m., Victory Lutheran Church, 5946 E. University Drive. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Global Ministries, Division of Overseas Ministries, designated for Medical Mission in Honduras or Victory Lutheran Church.
