Argyll Rutherford Thompson, 97 of Nevada died on Saturday, October 8 at the Story County Medical Center in Nevada. Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 13 at the Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada with Pastor Scott Milsom officiating. Burial followed in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
Argyll was born on July 14, 1908 in Roland to Oscar and Clara (Gaard) Thompson. After graduating from Roland High School, he attended the Des Moines College of Pharmacy and graduated from the Drake College of Pharmacy in 1930 as a registered pharmacist. He worked in Webster City and Boone pharmacies before working several years for W.L. Tipton & Sons in Nevada. Argyll married Wilma Frush on August 11, 1942 in Fremont, Nebraska. Argyll and Wilma purchased a Rexall Drug Store from Casey Ebert which they owned and operated for many years in Nevada before Argyll retired in July of 1973. After retirement, Argyll worked as a relief pharmacist for several pharmacists in central Iowa.
Argyll was a charter member of the Nevada Lions Club, member of the Central Presbyterian Church, and a former member of the Nevada Chamber of Commerce. He continued his membership in the Nevada Lions Club and was recently honored with a 57 year membership certificate when his fellow Lions Club members held a special meeting in the hospital cafeteria so that Argyll could attend a genuine meeting and accept the certificate.
His interests included old and new automobiles, building models, travel by car and airplane and sports, especially baseball. He called play-by-play for baseball games at the Billy Sunday Field in Nevada.
Argyll is survived by a sister, Maxine (Ed) Chinnock of Andover, Minnesota; Five nieces, Karen (Art) Rudd of Anoka, Minnesota, Rose Mary (Bob) Anderson and Margie Mix of Pleasantville, Judy Pletcher and Claudia (Warren) Pitcher of West Des Moines; Two nephews, Robert (Rorie) Chinnock of Victoria, Minnesota and James (Julie) Irish of Moline, Illinois; And extended family and a host of friends.
Argyll was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Wilma of 62 years on May 18, 2004.
Visitation was held Wednesday, October 12 with the family present from 5-7:00 P.M. at Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada. The family also received friends from 10:30-11:00 A.M. on Thursday prior to the service at the Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Nevada Lions Club.
