Samantha Jeane Opperman, 28, Caitlyn Rae Opperman, 6, and Carter Ryan Opperman, 2, of Nevada died on Wednesday, Oct. 5, in a house fire. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at Memorial Lutheran Church with the Rev. Brice Hughes, First Christian Church - Disciples of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memory Gardens north of Nevada.Samantha was born on March 28, 1977, in Pascagoula, Miss., to James V. Farmer and Dolores A. (Smith) Strum. She was a 1995 graduate of Nevada High School. On July 20, 1996, she married Jack "Chip" E. Opperman at First Christian Church in Nevada. Samantha had been a purchasing agent for Donnelley Marketing and the USDA. She loved being with her children, watching movies and shopping.
Caitlyn was born on March 22, 1999, in Ames to Jack E. (Chip) and Samantha J. (Farmer) Opperman. She was a first-grader at Nevada Elementary School. Caitlyn loved to dance, ride her bike, play with her brother, and Dora the Explorer.
Carter was born on June 11, 2003, in Ames to Jack E. (Chip) and Samantha J. (Farmer). He loved being a daddy's boy, playing with any ball, playing grandpa's "Cornholeeo" and being with sissy and mama.
They are survived by husband and father, Chip Opperman of Nevada; Samantha's mother and Caitlyn and Carter's grandmother, Dolores Strum of Nevada; Samantha's father and Caitlyn and Carter's grandfather, James Farmer of Pascagoula, Miss.
Samantha also is survived by her sister, Jennifer Ann Farmer of Nevada; a half-sister, Michelle Byrd; two half-brothers, Michael and Paul Farmer; a step-sister, Carmen Endacott; and two step-brothers, Rusty and Randy Strum.
Caitlyn and Carter also are survived by their grandfather, Jack Opperman of Pilot Mound.
Samantha was preceded in death by grandfathers, O.D. Farmer, J.V. Gunter and Clifton Smith; grandmothers, Regina Gunter and Bessie Smith; and step grandparents, Wendal and Viola Strum.
Caitlyn and Carter are also preceded in death by their paternal grandmother, Patricia M. Opperman in August 2003.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at the Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th Street in Nevada.
A memorial fund has been established.
