Eugene Sheldahl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Sheldahl, passed away at the home of his parents, near Sheldahl, last Sunday. Eugene had been bedfast for several months and his passing had been more or less anticipated. He was 25 year of age.
Funeral services were held from the Bethlehem Lutheran church here yesterday afternoon with Rev. P. E. Onstad in charge. He was assisted by Rev. Peter Buland of Cambridge, a long-time friend of the family.
Eugene Merle Sheldahl, son of Andrew and Clara Sheldahl, was born Apr. 24, 1921, on a farm northeast of Slater. He was baptized and confirmed at the Palestine church by Rev. Buland. He attended Slater and Kelley schools and graduated from the White Oak Consolidated High school. He was actively engaged in farming until his health failed about a year ago. He kept an interest in farming until his death on Dec. 1. Throughout his lengthy illness his courage never wavered. Eugene died at the age of 25 years, seven months and six days.
He is survived by his mother and father; four brothers, R. B. of Des Moines and Robert, Dale and John of this community; three sisters, Oriett Montgomery of Des Moines, Virginia Webeking of Miami, Fla., and June Miller of Slater; an aged grandmother, one niece and four nephews.
There were brief services at the home. Pastor P. E. Onstad read the Twenty-third psalm and sang a solo, "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus."
The services at the Bethlehem church included two vocal numbers, a duet, "Under His Wings," by Otis Ihle and Homer Lewis, and a solo, "The Lord's Prayer," by Otis Dale.
Rev. Onstad preached the funeral sermon, taking as his theme, "Peace in Christ." There was also a message from Rev. Buland.
There were many lovely flowers, also gifts to the missions in memory of Eugene.
Pallbearers were Richard Heggen, Ervin Tweedt, Herbert Sheldahl, Marion Hermann, Buster Sheldahl and Don Boda. Burial was in the Bethlehem cemetery.
