Last Rites Held for Mrs. Julia Ersland
Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Ersland were held Thursday afternoon.
A short service at 1:30 p. m. was held in the Riis Funeral Home. Services were held at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 2:00. Pastor Leo O. Bjorlie was in charge.
Rev. James A. Crawford of Des Moines delivered the sermon at the church. He chose John 14:1-10 as his text.
Nilus Ihle sang "I'd Rather Have Jesus" and Louis Malmin sang "Nearing the Shore." Mrs. Oliver Newman, organist, accompanied the singers.
Pallbearers were Harold Ersland, Carroll Tweedt, Joe Floden, Albert Lehman, Glenn Fausch and J. C. Ersland.
Interment was in the Bethlehem Cemetery.
Obituary
Julia Ersland, daughter of Torres and Anna Sydnes, was born on Sept. 10, 1884, near Huxley. She was baptized and confirmed in the former Lincoln Lutheran Church. She later transferred her membership to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Slater where she remained a member.
On Sept. 21, 1907, she was united in marriage to Nels Ersland of Slater.
Mr. Ersland passed away on Jan. 1, 1947 and since that time Mrs. Ersland had been living in Des Moines with her adopted daughter, Mrs. Merlin Kirkwood, who is also her niece.
After a long illness, Mrs. Ersland passed away at home on Dec. 16, at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 6 days.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Merlin Kirkwood, three nieces, who were very close to her--Viola Walden and Mrs. F. F. Peel of Des Moines and Beatrice Walden of New York City; three brothers--Nels Sydnes and Weir Sydnes of Huxley and John Sydnes of Marshalltown; two sisters--Mrs. Celia Benshoof of Boone and Mrs. Andrew Wee of Huxley, and a host of relatives and friends.
Three sisters preceded her in death--Martha Birkestrand, Carrie Walden and Anna Tesdell.
