Henry Daniel Ehm, 93, of Huxley, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Visitation will be tonight, Thursday, Sept. 29 from 6-8 p.m., at Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater. Funeral services will take place on Friday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater with the Rev. Heidi Williams officiating. Burial will be at Slater Municipal Cemetery.
Henry was born July 28, 1912, to John and Louise "Lucy" (Hohertz) Ehm in Fontanelle. He married Dorothy Sydnes on Jan. 20, 1946, at Palestine Lutheran Church in Huxley.
Henry served as a sergeant in the Army Air Corp in the European-African-Middle East Theater during World War II, and received victory, bronze star and good conduct medals. He farmed before and after the service, although he also did carpentry work from 1946-1954. He and his wife lived in Story County from 1946-1973, returning to the area from Adair County in 2000. Henry was proud to have purchased the "home place" century family farm in Adair County in 1970, and farmed it until 2000. Henry was a longtime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle, and Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater where he was active in various capacities of the church including Vice President of the District for Luther League. Henry ran membership drives for Story County Farm Bureau and was a State Master Pork Producer in 1958. He was a member of the American Legion at Fontanelle and then in Slater.
Immediate survivors include his wife, Dorothy Ehm, of Huxley; three sons, John (Audrey), of Roseville, Minn., Don (Sherry) of Columbia, Tenn., and Rollie (Natalie), of Clinton; one brother, Herbert Ehm, of Winterset; six grandchildren, Elizabeth (Ginger), Jason, Erin (Erik), Katherine, Nikolaus and Caroline; three great-grandsons, Logan, Caleb and Jonah.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Fontanelle and/or Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Slater.
Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater was entrusted with arrangements.
