THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, September 27, 2005.

Richard Lee Smith, 72, of Nevada, died Sunday, Sept. 25, at his home. A celebration of Richard's life will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at SCORE Pavilion. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Woodland Cemetery in Iowa Center.

Richard was born June 21, 1933, in Story County to Clarence E. and Lillie G. (Kitchen) Smith. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. He married Shirley Mae Beard June 1, 1958, in Ames. He retired in November 1994 after 34 years as an equipment operator with the street department for the city of Nevada. He loved being with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Mae Smith of Nevada; one son, Michael Lee Smith of Nevada; one daughter, Michelle Marie Smith Dodd (Barry) of Fairfield; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela, on May 20, 1978; his parents; two brothers, Lawrence and Everett Smith; and four sisters, Opal Borton, Gladys Martens, Merle Borton and Eva Vasey.

Memorials may be directed to Woodland Cemetery Association in Iowa Center.
