Funeral services for Benjamin T. Hokel were held Saturday, Oct. 13, 1973 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater at 2:00 p.m.

Rev. John Ness was in charge of the services. Mrs. Alvin Lund was the organist and accompanied the soloist, Robert Weeks. He sang "How Great Thou Art" and "The King is Coming."

Pallbearers, all nephews of the deceased, were Harold Hokel, Telford Lodden, Eugene Hokel, Kermit Hokel, Orlando Hokel and Floyd J. Lynch.

Interment was in the Bethlehem Cemetery at Slater.

Obituary

Benjamin T. Hokel was born Sept. 2, 1903 at Cambridge, Ia., a son of Benjamin and Tona Hokel. He passed away at his home in Slater Thursday forenoon, Oct. 11, from a heart attack.

At the age of five, he moved to Huxley. He was baptized and confirmed in the Palestine Lutheran Church. On Jan. 1, 1927 he was united in marriage to Harriet Sheldahl of Roland. Most of their married life was spent in the Huxley and Slater vicinity.

Ben operated grocery stores and meat markets in the Slater and Huxley areas before going to work at the John Deere Company, from where he retired in 1966.

He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church for thirty-five years and a former member of the Slater Fire Department and the Community Club.

Surviving Ben are his wife, Harriet; one son, Carl of Huxley; four daughters, Mrs. Keith (Betty) Snider of Ames, Mrs. Rico (Phyllis) Milani of Madrid, Mrs. Stephen (Marilyn) Thomas of Ames and Mrs. Melvin (Karen) Wiles, Jr. of Grimes; 17 grandchildren; three brothers, Joe of Garden Grove, Calif., Henry of Belmond and Leonard of Marshalltown; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Bert (Nora) Hokel of Des Moines; nieces; nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Hokel was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
