Funeral Services for Anna Smidt
Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Smidt, mother of Mrs. Jonas Christianson were held at the Sundberg Funeral Home in Madrid, Monday morning. She had been in failing health since suffering three strokes in 1965. She spent the last four years of her life at the Lutheran Nursing Home in Madrid where she was affectionately known as "grandma" to all who cared for her. She died Thursday, Nov. 21 at the age of 93 years, six months and 14 days.
Mr. Charles Preston conducted the funeral service. Mr. Walter Hull sang, "Only One Life" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Pall bearers were her grandsons, John and Jim Smidt, Bob Christianson, her son-in-law, John Langeland and grand nephews, Harold and John Vander Suis. Interment was at West Lawn Cemetery, Orange City, Ia.
Obituary
Anna Hollander Smidt was born on a farm near Orange City, Ia., May 7, 1881, the youngest child of James and Lucy Hollander. She was a graduate of Northwestern College at OrangeCity, Ia. and a member of the Christian Reformed Church. She became the bride of Simon Smidt in 1902 and moved to Boyden, Ia. To this union four children were born Lucy, John, Geneva and Rosella. Mr. Smidt died as the result of an accident with run-a-way horses. His widow and children moved to Des Moines in 1923. Mrs. Smidt was a devoted wife and mother. She joined an undenominational group of Christians in 1921 and remained steadfast in her faith in Jesus Christ until her death.
She is survived by her son, John of Urbandale and daughter, Mrs. Jonas Christianson of Slater; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Blest be her memory.
