George (Butch) Charbonneau, age 67, of Nevada, died Thursday, September 15, 2005 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 19, 2005 at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada with Pastor Myron D. Herzberg to officiate. Burial of George's cremated remains will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Utica, Illinois at a later date. Friends may call Sunday, September 18, 2005 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada. Memorial gifts may be given to the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, the American Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
George Louis Charbonneau was born in Deer Park Twp., Illinois to George L. and Elaine (Phelps) Charbonneau. He served in the U.S. Navy at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from 1956 to 1960. On October 12, 1968 George married Janet Stewart at Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica, Illinois. He attended LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College in Peru, Illinois and graduated from Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1970. George worked at Sauer Danfoss in Ames until his retirement in January 2002. He then worked for Mechanical Comfort in Ames until December 2002.
George served on the Board of the American Red Cross, River Valley Credit Union, and the Society of Mechanical Engineers. He belonged to the Cyclone Country Holiday Rambler Recreational Vehicle Club and the Iowa Rose Good Sam Club. George was an Honorary member of the Story County 4-H, supervised the campground during the 4-H Fair, and volunteered at the Mid West Threshers in Mount Pleasant. He was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada.
George is survived by his wife, Janet of Nevada; two daughters, Carrie (Chris) Moellers of Davenport and Cathie Raley of Nevada; grandsons, Eric and Nick Moellers of Davenport and William Raley of Nevada; his mother, Elaine Charbonneau of Utica, Illinois; three brothers, Charles (Barbara) of Granville, Illinois, Richard of Utica, and Dale of Peru, Illinois; and a sister, Judith Van Buren of Utica, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his father, George L. Charbonneau.
