From Ames Times, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, September 29th, 1904.

Hazel Iona Porter

Hazel Iona Porter,eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Porter, was born Feb. 18, 1900 and died at their home three and one-half miles northeast of Ames Sept. 19, 1904, aged four years, seven months and one day. She was taken very suddenly ill on Monday night, Sept. 12, with that dread disease, cholera infantum. Everything that medical skill and kind and loving friends could do was done but God knew best, and on Monday evening Sept. 19th He called here little spirit home where she is waiting and beckoning for loved ones to meet her in that happy home were sorrow is unknown. Little Hazel [unreadable] and obedient child and her parents and friends are almost prostrated with grief over their sad bereavement. She leaves to mourn her loss, her father and mother and little sister Mildred, here grandparents Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Moses, her great grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Hardcastle, also her aged grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Porter of Fanner City, Ill., besides a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral was held at the family home Sept. 21st conducted by Rev. Wilson of the U.B. church and her little body was laid to rest in the Ames cemetery.

Darling Hazel thou hast left us
And thy loss we deeply feel,
But 'tis God that has bereft us
He can all our sorrows heal.
