Sam Maland, 76, Buried Thursday

The funeral rites for Sam Maland of near Huxley, who died on Jan. 15, were held Thursday afternoon. The brief services at the home at 1 o'clock included a vocal solo by Walter Christopher and devotion by Rev. H. E. Jacobson, pastor of the deceased.

The services at the Palestine church at 1:30 were in charge of Rev. Jacobson, assisted by Rev. Buland, former pastor and neighbor. Rev. Jacobson chose as his sermon text John 6:40. Rev. Buland, using the Norwegian language, took as his text Luke 24:29.

There were three vocal numbers. The congregation joined in singing, "Who Knows How Near My Life's Extended." A mixed quartet, composed of Mrs. Carl Reng, Mrs. Emil Westvold, Walter Christopher and Burton Tesdall sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul." A vocal solo, "The Old Rugged Cross," was sung by Wier Birkestrand, Jr.

There were many lovely floral tributes. Also gifts to the mission in memory of the deceased, the total sum being $18.50. The pallbearers were Lewis Larson, Arnold and Johns Nass, Harry Sheldahl, Ole Brendeland and Walter Christopher.

Burial was made in the family lot in the Palestine cemetery.

OBITUARY.

Samson Maland, the son of Engeborg and Johannes Maland, was born at Lisbon, Ill., Jan 16, 1863, and died at his home near Huxley, Jan. 15, 1940, one day from being 77 years old.

With his parents and other early settlers he came to Iowa and Story county in 1864, the trip being made in covered wagons, drawn by horses and oxen. Sam was then less than two years old. The family took up their residence among Palestine pioneers, but later located on a farm south of the Palestine church where Sam grew to manhood. He had lived in the same community ever since.

His marriage to Olena Margaret Nerness took place May 24, 1892. To them seven children were born, three of whom died in infancy. Surviving him are Margaret, now Mrs. Serene Johnson of near Kelley, and Joseph, Edwin and Miss Ethel of Des Moines. His wife died on Feb. 14, 1904.

Sam Maland's marriage to Miss Martha Sorhus dates back to March 29, 1911. To them seven children were born. One died in infancy. Surviving him are Beatrice, now Mrs. Francis Hopson of Little Rock, Ark.; Miss Alice Maland of Des Moines, and Martin, Stanley, Archie and Helen at home. Besides a loving wife he is also mourned by three sisters: Martha, Mrs. John Stenberg of Slater; Anna, Mrs. L. L. Tesdahl of near Cambridge, and Elisa, Mrs. L. T. Heggen of near Renwick, Ia., and three brothers: Elias of near Kanawha, Ia., Andrew of Slater and Martin of Huxley. Also eleven grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Maland was baptized by Rev. P. A. Rasmussen at Lisbon, Ill., and confirmed by Rev. J. H. Myhre in the fall of 1877. He was accepted into the membership of the Palestine congregation with his parents in 1865 and had been a member of the same church ever since.

Through these many years he served his church and community in many capacities, ever loyal to the teachings of a Christian mother. He was esteemed by neighbors and friends who with his relatives will revere her memory.
