“FUNERAL SERVICES HELD FOR PIONEER CAMBRIDGE WOMAN. – Special to the Journal: Cambridge, Feb. 12 – Funeral services for Mrs. John Backous, who died Feb. 6 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Harker, near Cambridge, were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at her daughter’s home east of Cambridge, conducted by Rev. Yackel of Nevada with two singers and pianist from the same place. Pallbearers were Sam Backous, Herold Backous, George Backous, Fred Chevill, William and Millard Neimier, all nephews of the deceased. Interment was in the Cambridge cemetery. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Chas. Kies, Ida and Vernal Harrison, Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Ostrander of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Flannery of Bondurant, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Chevill, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Chevill of Rhodes; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Link, Jr. of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. Loran Davis, Mrs. Levenia Duesbury, Wm. Hilton, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Ince, Henry Tomlinson, J. Oxley, Geo. Tomlinson, Mr. and Mrs. George Kolbas and Lela, Mrs. Lois Aldrich, all of Maxwell; Charles Ackley and Carol, of Marshalltown; Mrs. Annie Niemier, William Niemier, Mr. and Mrs. Milliard Niemier of Sheldahl; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mitchell of Fort Dodge, and a number of friends. Emma Louisa Netterfield, daughter of Miame and Binajah Netterfield, was born March 6, 1865, on the old homestead east of Cambridge. As a young woman she was engaged in the seamstress and dressmaking profession. She followed this profession until she was married to John Backous on June 22, 1891. To this union two children were born, a daughter, Levenia, and a son Floyd, who died in 1922. Her husband died on Jan. -, 1937. Following her husband’s death, she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Levenia Harker. Here she was tenderly cared for until her passing, Feb. 6, 1941. She was a lover of her home ad her neighbors and was always read to extend a helping hand to those in need. She was a member of the Methodist church in Cambridge an attended church until failing health made it impossible for her t do so. She leaves to mourn her passing, her daughter and husband Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Harker two grandsons, John and Paul Harker, one granddaughter Naome Harker and many other relatives and friends.”BURIAL: Iowa Historical Library, Des Moines, Iowa.
