DEATH CLAIMS MAT MICKELSON

Passed Away At the Polk County Home After a Lingering Illness--Buried Monday.

Mr. Henry Mickelson received a sad message on Thursday evening of last week, one that told of the death of his brother, Matt, at the Polk County Farm Home, where he had been cared for for several weeks. In poor health for several years, the victim of rheumatism, he had been unable to do any work for over a year. He was under medical care at the Lutheran hospital at Des Moines for about a year and was a while receiving treatment at the city hospital. About six weeks ago he was removed to the county farm home, where he passed away on Thursday evening of last week. The change for the worse in his general health dated back to the time of the flu, of which he was a victim and quite ill for a while. Since then he gradually failed.

The remains were shipped to Slater for burial and funeral took place on Monday afternoon from the home of Mrs. Mary Hovick and the Lincoln church. Burial was made in the Bethlehem cemetery. Rev. Duea had charge of the services, speaking in the Norwegian language. Mrs. Archie Peterson assisted with the singing, rendering two solos.

Mathias Mickelson was born near Slater on March 24, 1869, to parents Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Mickelson. He grew to manhood in this community and in 1894 he was married to Miss Bertha Hovick. To this union were born two boys, John Rogers and Jacob Sylvester. Twenty-three years ago the wife and mother died. Later Matt went to Des Moines, where he continued to remain, and for many years was the trusted and faithful employee at the home of C. C. Prouty. While troubled with rheumatism, he continued to work there till stricken with pneumonia during the flu period. Besides his two sons, who were present at the funeral, he is survived by five brothers. They are Oliver, Mike, Jacob, Henry and Severin. Of the five, Henry and Oliver were present at the last rites on Monday.
