PIONEER CITIZEN CALLED BY DEATH
ELIJAH PURVIS, RESIDENT OF GRANT TOWNSHIP SINCE 1855, IS DEAD.
Elijah Purvis, one of the pioneer and respected citizens of southwest Grant township, passed away at his home yesterday. Particulars regarding the funeral are not at hand. Mr. Purvis was a fine old gentleman and lived on the same farm in the southwest corner section of Grant township for many years. He was well known in this city, Ames and Cambridge, especially among the earlier residents.
He settled on his farm in the southwest corner of that township August 8, 1855, and has lived there ever since, making him the oldest resident of the county upon a single farm. He was born in Sangamon county, Illinois, April 5, 1829. He was reared in Shelby county, Illinois, in a part of that county that is now Moultrie county. He first came to Story county in the fall of 1854 and stayed with a brother-in-law, Noah Berry, who had come the year before; and during that visit he picked out the location which he occupied with his wife and three children the next August.
