Funeral Rites Held Thursday Afternoon for James A. Chance

Special to the Journal:
Zearing, Sept. 17--Many sympathetic friends and relatives were in attendance at the funeral services for James A. Chance of Zearing, which were held at the Church of Christ, Thursday afternoon with Rev. R. E. Kerney, pastor of the Evangelical church in charge, assisted by Rev. George W. Manning of Des Moines.

Carroll Bailey, Mrs. Jerry Hankins, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Golly rendered the vocal selections in quartette arrangement accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Lyle Bailey. Th many beautiful flowers were arranged by Mrs. Clarence Bump and Mrs. R. A. Ricketts. The pall bearers were Merle Thornton, Clarence Bump, Frank Tett, Roy Keoppel, Fred Smith and Charles Stevens. Interment was in the cemetery at State Center, Iowa.

James A. Chance, son of Johnathon and Sarah Chance was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, February 17, 1870 and died at the home of his son Virgil, Sept. 8, 1938 at the age of 68 years, 6 months and 22 days.

Mr. Chance came with his parents to Iowa when he was three years old, locating in Marshall county and later in Story county, February 18, 1891. He was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Wood. Four years were spent on a farm near Nevada after which they moved to Zearing where Mr. Chance operated a livery stable for ten years and then moved to the farm, returning to Zearing in 1933.

Three years ago Mr. Chance suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered. Death was due to a heart attack which brought his life to close becoming ill in the evening and passed away at 1:15 the following morning.

In his immediate family, Mr. Chance is survived by his wife, three sons and four daughters, Mrs. Lola Lutz, Zearing; Floyd Chance, Zearing; Merle Chance, McCallsburg; Virgil Chance, Mrs. Florine Dudley, Mrs. Florice Dea, and Mrs. Eloise Sterling, all of Zearing. A daughter Mrs. Myrtle Romelfanger, preceded him in death. He is also survived by three brothers: Thomas Chance, Des Moines; John Chance and Jerry Chance both of Zearing and a sister Mrs. Fred Thornton, also of Zearing. There are six grandchildren: Maxine Chance, Bernice Chance, Edgar Chance, Wayne Dudley, Helen Lutz and Eugene Romelfanger. There are other relatives and a host of friends. Mr. Chance has been a member of the Christin Church for the last fifteen years. He was a good neighbor, kind and loving husband and father and always ready and willing to help others.

Relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral services were: Thomas Chance, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Wood, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wood of Nevada; Mr. and Mrs. Vern Weuve and daughter Violet of State Center; Mr. and Mrs. Roy McGuire and Miss Alice Wood of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Rash, Union; L. Chance, Dows; Mrs. Jennie Rash, New Providence; Mrs. Ailene McKee, Mrs. Rachel Sterling, John Sterling of Webster City; Mr. and Mrs. Henzie, State Center; Fred Bump of Dows; Mr. and Mrs. R. Sloan and daughter, Mrs. Ralph Cessna of Nevada.
