"Obituary of Carl Verdien

Carl Victor Verdien, son of Johannee and Anna Lena Verdien, was born at Frillesaas, Haaland, Sweden, on April 18, 1896, and passed away at his home in Nevada, Iowa, on December 12, 1962.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Frillesaas, Halland, Sweden, and became a member of Salem Lutheran Church at Roland in January, 1951.

Mr. Verdien came to America in 1915, stopping in Lincoln, Illinois, with an uncle. Later he went to Chicago, where he was employed as a carpenter for the McLennin Construction Co. After a few years he came to Iowa, were he started farming near Jefferson, residing there until 1937. He then moved to Story County, living on a farm northeast of Nevada until March, 1940, when he purchased a farm in Milford township. They lived on their farm until August 11, 1962, when he and his wife moved into their home in Nevada, where he lived until his death.

Carl suffered a stroke on July 7, 1950, leaving him partly paralyzed on the right side. He was able to be about most of the time. Two years ago, while visiting friends in Nebraska, he suffered a heart attack from which he never fully recovered.

Carl was married on February 12, 1938, to Loretta Haase of Dana, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta; a step-daughter, Mrs. Beverly Deitrick of Des Moines; two step-grandchildren, Tammy Lou and Bryan Paul Dietrick; two half-sisters, Mrs. Karen Johannson and Anna Marie Olson, both of Sweden; and three half-brothers, David, Rangner, and Evert Verdien, all of Sweden; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held in Salem Lutheran Church on Saturday, December 15, with Pastor Everett Nelson officiating, assisted by Pastor Victor Hackbarth of Nevada. Mrs. Frank Kaltenheuser and Mrs. Lester Olso sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Pallbearers were Bror Anderson, Fred McCloy, Dwayne Myers, Silas Thompson, Paul Stoline, and Wallace Stanfield. Burial was in the Roland Cemetery."
