Last Rites for Sherm Bates at Maxwell, Feb. 13

Funeral services for Sherman A. Bates were held in the Cooper Funeral Home in Maxwell Saturday afternoon at 3:45. Rev. Randall Sims officiated. Alice Gooden sang "In the Garden" and "Abide With Me", accompanied by Madeline Summit.

Casket bearers were Henry Duesbury, George Jacobsen, P. J. Wetrich, C. R. Stone, Donald Titus and John Crabb.

Interment was in the Peoria cemetery southeast of Maxwell.

Obituary

Sherman A. Bates was born on a farm seven miles southwest of Collins in Jasper County on Oct. 7, 1871 and died at the Story County Hospital Feb. 10, 1960 at the age of 88 years, 4 months and 3 days.

He was the last surviving child of the twelve children born to John A. Bates and Miriam Reagan Bates, and lived in the Collins area his entire lifetime. He is survived by several nieces and nephews and many friends.

The minister's talk was inspiring and comforting and was ended with James Whitcomb Riley's poem, "He Is Not Dead, He is Just Away."

Among the relatives attending the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. William Carver and Mr. and Mrs. Marion Smith of Nevada, Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Holmes of Clemons, Lowell Holmes of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Smith of Colo, DeLane Hand of Maxwell, and the following from Collins: Miss Hazel Holmes, Mrs. Florence Hand, Mrs. Irene Snyder, Mr. and Mrs. Orrin Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Tjelmeland, Wallace Snyder and Doyle Snyder.
