PIONEER OF STORY WAS LAID TO REST

ISRAEL HELPHREY, CIVIL WAR VETERAN CAME TO NEVADA WHEN LAD OF 10 YEARS

Israel Helphrey, 82, Civil war veteran who died at his home in Ogden last week, was one of the early day residents of Nevada, coming here with his parents in the very early fifties and spending his boyhood days here enlisting in the union army when 19 years of age.

Israel Helphrey was born May 29, 1843 in Oglaize county, Ohio and died at his home in Ogden Dec. 16, 1925, at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 17 days. When ten years old he moved with his parents to Nevada where he spent his boyhood days until 1862 when at the age of 19 he enlisted in the union forces of the Civil war, serving faithfully for nearly three years.

He was united in marriage on Dec. 14, 1865 near Ames to Mary Ann Wills who has proven a loyal and loving companion for over 60 years. In 1877 they moved to Boone county which has been their home until the time of his death with the exception of a few years spent in Nevada. To this union eight children were born, five sons and three daughters. Three sons, George W., Charles W. and Samuel E. and one daughter, Elizabeth having preceded their father in death.

Those left to mourn his passing are his aged companion, two sons Harvey and Albert of Ogden, two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Coan of Nevada and Mrs. Charles Wiser of Mt. Washington, Mo., seventeen grandchildren and elven great grand children and a host of friends.

The funeral services were held at the Congregational church of Ogden at 2:30 o'clock Friday, Dec. 18 by the Elder Scriven of Nevada and Rev. Wiggins of Ogden. The Civil war veterans and the American Legion conducting the military services Interment was made at Glenwood cemetery at Ogden.
