WELL KNOWN AMES MAN PASSED AWAY AT HOME OF DAUGHTER

Ames, Dec. 5--The funeral services of George Henry Maxwell, 78, Ames pioneer citizen who died at the home of his daughter in Chicago Thursday forenoon, will be held from the Congregational church in Ames Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock in Ames Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, in charge of Rev. H. K. Hawley.

The boy arrived in Ames this morning from Chicago in charge of the daughter, Miss Jessie Maxwell and it is probable that the remains will lie in state Saturday afternoon, although definite arrangements have not been made at this time.

Mr. Maxwell has been a resident of Ames or nearby since 1868 and had long been recognized as one of the leading citizens of the college town and a familiar figure in public affairs of this part of the county.

His fist business venture was in merchandise, his store under the firm name of Alexander and Maxwell, being located where the Norris grocery now stands.

Retiring from the merchandise business, Mr. Maxwell engaged in the livery business known as Nichols and Maxwell. The livery barn was located just west of the Ames hotel, on the lot now vacant.

Mr. Maxwell subsequently became an importer of high grade draft horses. In this business he became well known throughout the middle west, supplying Minneapolis, his principal market with horses then used for the city street car system. On two occasions he imported horses from France.

Mr. Maxwell's fame was not attained solely as a horse dealer, for in the years to follow he made an unusual name for himself as a politician, booster and citizen. This phase of his life was started when Ames voters elected him to the council in 1882 on which body he served more than a half dozen terms, a considerable part of which was during the administration of Mayor Parley Sheldon, one of his most intimate friends.
