THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, August 9, 2005.
Stanley B. Kirk, 95, of Columbia, Mo., and formerly of Ames, died Sunday, Aug. 7, at Boone Hospital Center. A graveside memorial service and burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Stanley B. Kirk was born Sept. 28, 1909, in Hugo, Colo., and moved with his family to rural Nevada shortly thereafter. He graduated from Shipley High School and later attended Simpson College before settling in Ames. He was a skilled machinist and worked at the Iowa State College Physics Lab and the Iowa State Highway Commission before retiring. While at ISU in the early 1940s, he helped fabricate parts that were used in the original ABC Computer. He married Dorothy Posegate in 1936. She preceded him in death in 1973. He later lived in Dardanelle, Ark., and Topeka, Kan.
He was a member and an elder of the Presbyterian Church. He loved aviation, having been a private pilot in the 1940s, and he enjoyed reading, fishing, and bowling.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Smith-Kirk of Columbia; six step-sons; nineteen step-grandchildren; one son, Gary Kirk (Sandy) of Topeka, Kan.; one daughter, Carol Crandall (Robert) of Des Moines; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
