J. W. HAGUE DIED VERY SUDDENLY SATURDAY NIGHT
HEART TROUBLE CAUSE OF PASSING OF WELL-KNOWN CITIZEN.
J. W. Hague, 66, of Fifth and Avenue H, died very suddenly from heart failure, Saturday night about 8 o'clock, while seated at a table at the Ambrose garage in a game of checkers with Guy Hardin.
Mr. Hague had left his home in his usual health after the evening meal, had walked up town and dropped into the Checker Club room, where he greeted his friends cheerfully, took a seat at a table and started a game. Suddenly Mr. Hardin noticed him place his elbow upon the table, and lean over it as if ill. Just at that time Dr. Houston stepped into the room an called by Mr. Hardin, went to the side of Mr. Hague and after feeling of his heart pronounced him dead.
Death was due either to apoplexy or heart failure, more probably the latter. He had been a sufferer at times from heart trouble.
The news of his very sudden death was a great shock to not only Mrs. Hague and his daughter, Mable, who were at the home, but to other members of the family and the community as well.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 from the Methodist church by his pastor, Rev. E. A. Ramige.
John William Hague was born November 5, 1857, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Hague, a pioneer family on the old Hague homestead, two and a half miles southeast of this city. He lived at home as a boy and graduated from the first class to finish Nevada high school, in 1877.
The class graduated under the late William P. and Adaline M. Payne, who were then at the head of the schools. Members of the class were J. W. Hague, Peter Joor, now a practicing physician at Maxwell, William O. Payne of Des Moines, Newton Simmons, who is in the west, Mrs. Minnie Mills and Rose H. Murphy of Nevada, Florence Dana-Corey of Seattle, Wash., Helen Harper, deceased, and Miss Lina Hamilton, whose present whereabouts are not known.
It was May 1, 1883, that he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Isabelle Tichenor. Mr. Hague spent the most of his life in the community in which he was born, the greater part of it on the old family homestead, which he owned at the time of his death.
His influence for all things that uplift the community was felt. For a number of years he was the secretary of the school board of Nevada township. In 1885 he joined the Evangelical church at Summit and was active and zealous in church work. He held such offices as trustee and Sunday School superintendent almost continually ever since he became a church member.
In February, 1915, Mr. and Mrs. Hague moved to Nevada where they continued to exert an influence for good in both church and community. Mr. Hague served a couple of terms on the city council and has been active in public affairs.
Mr. Hague died on the evening of January 5th, 1924, at the age of 66 years. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and their daughter, Mabel, his aged mother, Mrs. M. J. Miller of Vera Cruz and Clyde Miller in Canada, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Rose Kirk in the state of Washington, and Mrs. Nellie Smith of Ventura, Calif. Besides these immediate relatives there is a large host of friends, both in this community and elsewhere who are saddened at his passing.
All who knew him best; with his cheerful disposition and christian character, will readily agree that he is highly deserving of every reward that the Divine Providence will have in store for him in the great beyond, his eternal home.
