Nels E. Waugh was born at Etne, Norway, June 26, 1856, and died at his home in Roland on October 25, 1937, at the age of 81 years and 4 months.
He arrived in this country on his 14th birthday, on June 25,1870, after having been confirmed in a special class before leaving Norway. He made his home for a number of years with the Torkel Henryson family in Story CIty. From 1876 to 1879 he resided in Morris, Ill., returning again to Story City.
He was united in marriage to Rikka Vae on October 26, 1882. They then settled on a farm three miles north of Roland where they lived until 1904, when they moved to Roland where they have since resided.
Six children were born to this union. A son died in infancy, a daughter died at the age of eight years, and the youngest son, Fred, died February 17, this year, in an automobile accident at the age of 43 years. The deceased is survived by his aged wife, one son, Erick of Roland, and two daughters, Nellie Josendal of Roland and Mrs. Bertha Hanson of Des Moines. He also leaves eight grandchildren.
Mr. Waugh was the last one of a family of three sisters and three brothers to pass away. He made one trip back to Norway, in 1895, to visit his mother.
After moving to Roland, Mr. Waugh became interested in the business activities of the town. He was in the clothing business here for one year. When the Roland Savings Bank, which later became the First National Bank, was organized, he was active in the organization and served as a director and headed the institution as president for a number of years. Besides the farm on which the family lived, he acquired more land in this vicinity and was the owner of several farms at the present time.
He became ill two years ago and was able to be about town very little since that time.
