Pioneer Woman Buried at Ames Today
Ames, Oct. 12--Funeral services were held at the Adams Funeral home here today for Mrs. Lucy Arrasmith-Cox, 81, pioneer woman of this community, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam Long, Sunday.
Mrs. Cox was born Jan. 13, 1856 in a log cabin on a farm four miles northeast of Ames, a daughter of William and Alvina Arrasmith. She was the second child in a family of 15 children, four of whom still survive. Her parents came to Iowa in a covered wagon and were among the early settlers in Story county before the town of Ames was organized.
Mrs. Cox received her education in the county schools and later taught in one of them. She was married Nov. 5, 1876 to John R. Cox, who came to Story county from Indiana. He has been dead for many years.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Sam Long of Ames, Mrs. J. J. Roland of Sioux City, one son, Vinnedge Guy Cox of Waseca, Minn., two sisters, Mrs. Bert Baumgardner of McCallsburg, Mrs. Edith Ohmart of Guthrie, Okla., and two brothers, Aden Arrasmith of near Ames and Clarence Arrasmith of McCallsburg. Seven grandchildren survive also.
