Walter Richard Robertson, 79, of Ames, died Friday, July 29, under hospice care at his home in Ames. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 3, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames with Reverend David Burling officiating. Burial will follow in Ames Municipal Cemetery with military rites provided by American Legion Post 37.
Walter Richard Robertson was born March 2, 1926, in Quincy, Mass. He married Margie Quade on Dec. 1, 1945. He served in the United States Navy during WW II. He was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 30 years. Following retirement, he worked for Firstar bank for 10 years.
Walter was a member of American Legion Post 37 and was an officer in the National Letter Carriers Association.
He was survived by his wife, Margie Robertson of Ames; son, Charles (Mary) Robertson of West Des Moines; daughter, Linda M. Gibbs (Timothy Sharpe) of Clive; son, Bill (Jan) Robertson of West Branch; grandchildren, Matthew Gibbs (Michael Carlson) of Des Moines; Julie Robertson of Waukee; Sgt. Marshall Gibbs, USMC, stationed in Okinawa, Japan; C.R. (Lindsay) Robertson of Chariton; Evan Yeutsy of Coralville; Molly, Katie and Jack Robertson of West Branch; and sister, Dorothy McAdam of Quincy, Mass.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and William Robertson; three sisters and two brothers.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.
Memorials may be directed to Homeward Hospice of Ames, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Slater Area Pool or Slater Library.
