Obituary of Mrs. Thornton
Cicelia Batie was born near London, Canada Sept. 25, 1831 and died August 31, 1915 at the home of her daughter Mrs. Sherm Ulum, aged 83 years, 11 months and 5 days. At the age of eighteen years she moved with her parents to Grant county, Wisconsin and on June 1st 1853 was united in marriage to Peter N. Thornton near Bloomington, Wis., where they made their home until March 1884 when they moved on a farm near Colo, Story county, Iowa, where she resided until about five years ago when she went to live with her daughter Mrs. Ulum. Her husband preceded her in death nearly twenty three years having died March 12, 1893. To this union were born eight children, two, Mary and Adam, having died in childhood and one daughter Mrs. Minnie C. Granger having passed away eight years ago. The surviving children are Mrs. H. Isabell Lhommedieu of Colo, Robert H. Thornton of Lytton, Mrs. Eliza Ulum of near Maxwell, William P. Thornton of near Colo and Frank N. Thornton of Nevada. Also a niece Mrs. R. T. Holmes of Greenfield, who was a member of the home from infancy to womanhood. Besides the immediate family, two brothers Thomas Batie of Bottinean, N. D., Adam Batie of Montana and one sister Mrs. Eliza Telfer of Ilderton, Ont., together with nineteen grand children and two great grand children and many other relatives and friends are left to mourn her loss.
In girlhood she united with the Presbyterian church later having joined the Baptist church in Bloomington, Wis., and remained a faithful member until her death, having always lived a consistent christian life. She was a kind, loving mother, helpful to all she met and bore all her suffering with patience and cheerfulness. Her friends are numbered by her acquaintances. Funeral services were held in the U. E. Church at Colo Thursday at 11 a. m. conducted by Rev. C. H. Hanson of Collins assisted by Rev. W. C. McKinley and Rev. G. H. Johnson. Interment was made in the Colo cemetery beside her husband. Relatives from a distance in attendance at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Thornton of Lytton, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mason of Bloomington, Wis., and Mrs. Helen Gilkinson of Melvin, Iowa.
