Palemon Goodnow, son of Eli and Louisa Goodnow, was born in Vermont, November 29, 1834, and died at his home in Iowa Center, July 24, 1919, at the age of eighty-four years, seven months and twenty-six, days. Wen he was six months of age his parents moved in Franklin county, New York, where he grew in manhood and on January 24, 1841, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Halford. To this union was born six children: Florin, whom died in infancy, Mary c. and Louisa C., Eli, Milton and Leroy. In 1861 he answered his country's call and enlisted in Co. E. 98th Reg. of the New York volunteers, and rendered valiant service for two and one-half years when he received an honorable discharge from his government.
He, with his wife and children, moved to Wisconsin in 1866 where they lived until 1875, when they moved to Shelby county, Iowa, and in 1878 moved to Iowa Center where they lived until his death. In 1898 he was converted and united with the United Evangelical church of Iowa Center and lived a faithful and consistent Christian life to the end, although for the past two years his failing health prevented is attendance at the services of the church.
Mr. Goodnow received his education in the public schools of New York. He was a miller by trade, in which occupation he was engaged the greater part of his life, but during the latter part of his life had worked at the carpenter trade.
About sixteen months ago he was stricken with hemmorrhage of the brain from which he never recovered but continued steadily failing until the "tent" dissolved and the spirit returned to Him who gave it. During his affliction he was patient and entirely resigned to his Master's will.
Two children, Florin and Mary C., preceded him to the spirit world. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Sam Dunahoo, and three sons, Eli,of Wesley; Milton of Sioux City, and LeRoy of Nevada, also sixteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. S. H. Smith and Mrs. Harriet Towns and two brothers, C. D. and Chas. of Wisconsin, besides a host of friends.
Funeral services were held in the U. E. church at Iowa Center Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. In charge of Rev. M. E. Shank, of the U. E. church of Nevada, assisted by Rev. V. G. Wilson of the local church of Iowa Center and interment was in the Iowa Center cemetery.
