Herb graduated from Teachers College High in Cedar Falls in 1947 and spent the following summer on the farm. That fall he started work at the Clay Equipment Company in Cedar Falls. After three months, he found that factory work was not for him. He started work at the Benson Creamery as a general laborer. After one-and-a-half years, he accepted a job at the Hudson Co-op Creamery as a dock foreman and official weigher and grader of cream. In February 1951, he was inducted into the Army. After basic training, he became supply corporal and later became supply sergeant. Upon release from the Army in the fall of 1953, he returned to the Hudson Co-op Creamery. After a short time, he went to the Marshall Creamery where he got his buttermakers and graders licenses. Upon seeing an ad in the Des Moines paper, he applied at the Slater Co-op and was hired as second Buttermaker. He left the creamery in 1959 because of rheumatic fever and went to work for the Story County Road Department maintaining roads until November 1963. He then went to work for Standard Oil as an agent delivering petroleum to farmers, businesses and homes. In 1983, he closed the business and started with the Iowa Department of Agriculture Dairy Division as an inspector. He held that position until his retirement in 2003.
Herb was an active member of Slater United Methodist Church, which he helped build. He was a member of the 40 & 8, American Legion Post 260, which he also helped build. He had held all offices in the Post and was finance officer at the time of his illness. He went on to serve as past district commander and department vice commander. He was also involved in the Slater Community Club.
