Mabel Annie Corke Was born Sept. 20, 1872 in Millbrook, Illinois. She was the youngest of four children born to Thomas and Agnes (Brodie) Corke.

By the time she was ten years of age she had lost her parents and oldest brother, Thomas and came, then, with her two remaining brothers, George and Albert, to Iowa to live with relatives in Story County.

She attended a country school near the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Brodie and later continued her education in Maxwell and Drake University. Mabel was a good student and became a teacher. She taught in various schools in Story and Polk Counties.

In her youth, she became a member of the Presbyterian church in Maxwell and was faithful in attendance in the Sunday School and church services.

In young woman hood, Mabel became the sole survivor of her family, having lost her brothers, George and Albert.

On her birthday, September 20, 1900 she was united in marriage to Lee Shickell in Nevada. They established their home on a farm near McCallsburg. After a few years they moved to a farm north of Iowa Center where their daughter Leilia and oldest son, William were born. Later they purchased an adjoining farm to Lee's parents southeast of Nevada which because their permanent home and the birthplace of their two younger sons, Marion and Lloyd. The family grew to adulthood here.

In 1936 they moved into the home that Lee's parents occupied prior to their deaths and it was here in 1950 that they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. They continued to enjoy life together, eve though both were in failing health, for seven more years.

Following the passing of her compaion in May 1957, Mabel was tenderly cared for by her family until two years ago. It was then, in gradually failing health, that she entered Leola's Guest Home where she was given splendid care and medical attention.

On the morning of December 13, 1966 she quietly departed this live leaving as her survivors, her daughter, Mrs. David Grimes of Fillmore, Indiana and her three sons, Willia,, Marion, and Lloyd all of Nevada. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends and neighbors. One grandson, Robert Lewis Shickell, preceded her in death in 1956.
