Col. Herbert E. Hadley, Spanish American War Veteran and Nevada attorney since 1903, died at 7:40 a. m. Sunday in the Story County Hospital after a lingering illness.

He was a past master of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the 20th Century Club, a past president of the Story County Bar Association; first commander of the American Legion Post in Nevada, and was always active in a wide range of community activity, including Toastmasters and Lions Club.

Born in 1876

The son of Peter and Anne Myrah Hadley, he was born on a farm 12 miles north of Ft. Dodge in Webster County on April 5, 1876.

He attended country schools, took the equivalent of a high school degree at Humboldt Junior College and entered the University of Iowa to study law. After his graduation in 1903 he settled in Nevada to practice with Col. Chentland, who had been his company commander during the Spanish-American War.

On August 26, 1908 he was married to Stella Elizabeth Lowman at Iowa City at the home of her parents in that city.

In 1909 Hadley was elected to serve a four year term as County Attorney.

During this period he organized Nevada's first Scout Troop and served as its Scoutmaster. He and his troop of Scouts were camping east of Nevada when the first guns of World War I were fired.

He attended the Army War College, Washington, D. C., graduating in 1918. He spent some time at Fort Snelling, Minneapolis, Minn. and was commissioned Lt. Colonel, a rank he held until his retirement in 1954.

Following World War I he served as Special Assistant to the United States Attorney General.

Upon his return to Nevada, Hadley became the first Commander of American Legion Post No. 48.
