OBITUARY
HENRY FIFER
Henry Fifer was born in Louisville, Ky., August 29, 1840 and died at Nevada, Iowa, January 10, 1917, aged 76 years, 4 months and 12 days. He was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. George Fifer and grew to manhood on a farm in Indiana. He was married to Rachel Coble at Charlestown, Indiana, in 1860. Their first home was at Wyota, Wisconsin, where they went when first married and lived for about eight years. They then started for a new home in Iowa traveling in a covered wagon and being ferried across the Mississippi at Dubuque. They settled then on a farm near Ackley, where they live until their removal to Nevada in 1876. They then occupied the home on Vine street, Where they have continued to live for more than forty years. To their union were born nine children, three boys and six girls. Of whom one boy died in infancy and another Wm. H. on December 12, 1912. He is survived by his wife and children, eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The daughters are all here and the surviving son will be here for the funeral. The children are Mrs. Ina Walker of Nevada, Mr. Emma Weiher of Rowley, Mrs. Stela Kirk of Panora, Thos. L. of Tacoma, Washington, Mrs. Mabel Ray of Des Moines, Mrs. Bessie Minkler, living near Nevada in Milford township, and Miss Lola of Des Moines.
Mr. Fifer's death was from apoplexy and very sudden. He had been about the house in the morning but found himself ill. He and Mrs. Fifer were alone in the house at the time, and she helped him as she could; but in a few minutes he was unconscious an in half an hour he died. Mrs. Weiher who had been visiting the home folks was still in the city but was with her sister Mrs. Walker, and the two responded to their mother's call before their father's death; but his passage was too rapid for any others to arrive.
Mr. Fifer was one of the old an esteemed residents of Nevada. He was a kind husband, father, friend and neighbor and an habitual sympathizer with all that was good in the world. His funeral will be conducted Sunday afternoon at two o'clock by Rev. McDade at the house.
