THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, July 21, 2005.

Jerry (Gerald) Ray Boylan, 57, of Ames, died Wednesday, July 13, in Jakarta, Indonesia. He had been a resident of Indonesia for more than 30 years. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Jerry (Gerald) Ray Boylan was born May 3, 1948, to Dr. and Mrs. David Boylan of Ames. He graduated from Ames High School in 1966 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1971 in urban planning. He began overseas assignments while employed as an urban planner with the Leo A. Daly Company in Omaha, Neb. He was involved with planning, layout and design for the Huffco and Union Oil Companies in the United States and in Kalimantan, Indonesia, and as project planner for the development of the Saudi Arabian National Guard Headquarters in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

He was an urban planner and project manager for CH2M-Hill in Seattle, Wash., where he was involved with the construction, site selection, environmental studies and maintenance inspection for the Northwest Corridor Oil Pipeline. In 1982, he joined the N. D. Lea & Associates as resident engineer responsible for supervision and construction of asphalt and Macadam roads in Surabaya, East Java. In 1984, he joined Deleuw International engineering firm as project engineer and senior company representative for construction and maintenance of roads throughout East Java.

In 1987, he became chief resident engineer for BCEOM Consulting Engineers with responsibilities for supervision, development and maintenance of major road projects in Surabaya, East Java.

He became licensed as a civil engineer and continued his work with road, highway and bridge projects throughout Indonesia as an independent contractor. He was project and district manager for N.D. Lea Associates, Kampsax International, PT. Panca Perkass International Konstruksi, Louis Berger International and Pacific Consultants International.

A year ago, he developed cancer of the tongue. After extensive surgery and reconstruction, he resided in Jakarta. Recovery was hindered by effects of malaria, contracted earlier, and a resulting heart murmur and he died in the hospital in Jakarta.

He is survived by his wife, Vonny; one daughter, Anne-Christie; and his parents.

He will be remembered, among other things, for his congeniality, humor, kindness, devotion and Christian testimony.

Viewing and visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 22.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated for the Misi Kita Bersama School Fund. This school is a Christian school in a remote area of West Kalimantan. Jerry had a special interest in helping children there to receive a formal education.

Stevens Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
