Funeral Services Held on Saturday for J. H. Spurling

Funeral services for J. H. Spurling, 91, who died here Wednesday morning, were held Saturday afternoon at the Morfoot Funeral Home with Rev. C. E. Lookingbill in charge. Following the services here the body was accompanied to McCallsburg, where it was laid to rest in the Warren Township cemetery by the side of the wife who died in 1923.

The funeral was attended by a large concourse of relatives and old neighbors and friends of the deceased.

J. H. Spurling was born at Wheeling, Virginia on September 28, 1847. He left the "Old Dominion", when a lad of nine years and came with his parent to Illinois where he grew to manhood.

It was there that he met his wife in 1868. Later they came to Iowa and were married at Albion, where they lived for a year and then returned to Illinois. Eleven years later they came west again, making the trip in a covered wagon and then settled in Marshall county. There they lived for ten years and then came over into Story county.

They located on what was long known as the Sinclair section south of McCallsburg, where they lived for twenty-two years. They lived for twenty-two years. They then moved to Nevada and this has since been his home with the exception of two years spent in northern Iowa with a son.

His wife preceded him in death in the year 1923. Four children also preceded him. Mr. Spurling passed away at the Iowa Sanitarium at 11:00 a. m. Wednesday, January 4, 1939 at the age of 91 years, 3 months and six days.

Mr. Spurling became a member of Johnson Grove Methodist Episcopal church about 45 years ago and was true to that faith from that time on through life.

He leaves to mourn his death four sons and one daughter. They are Charles of Nevada, Edward of near Zearing, Albert and Williams of Nevada, and Mrs. Annie Yocum of Iowa Center.

He has 29 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren besides other relatives and a host of friends.
