Funeral Services Held at Slater for Charley Ryen

Slater, Oct. 31--Funeral services for Charley Ryen were held Saturday afternoon at eh home at 2:30 o'clock and at the Bethlehem Lutheran church at 2 o'clock. The services were in charge of Rev. P. E. Onstad assisted by Rev. E. R. Rorem of Story City.

The many beautiful floral offerings were arranged by Mrs. Carroll Tweedt and Mrs. Clarence Ryg. A large number of gift of money to the missions and other organizations were given by relatives and friends in memory of Mr. Ryen.

A vocal duet, "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" was sung by Mrs. M. S. Heggen and Mrs. A. L. Peterson. A solo, "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus Name" was sung by Rev. Onstad; Nilus Ihle also sang a solo, "Beneath the Cross of Jesus."

The pall bearers were: Charley Klonglan, Thomas Weeks, Randall Reinertson, Rudolph Anderson, Walter Pritchard and G. J. Alleman. Burial was made in the Bethlehem cemetery.

Charley Ryen, son of Knudt and Olena Ryen, was born Dec. 9, 1874, in Gardner, Ill., and died at his home in Slater, Oct. 21, 1947, after an extended illness at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 12 days. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the Gardner Prairie church.

He was united in marriage to Miss Mattie Larson, on Jan. 7, 1903, at Gardner, Ill. Shortly afterward they moved to the Slater community where they made their home ever since. To this union were born six children, all of who survive him except Myrtle, who died Oct. 15, 1921.

Mr. Ryen was a devoted husband and father. He has been an active member of the Bethlehem church of Slater since it was organized and served as a trustee of the church for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, three brothers and two sisters.

He leaves to mourn his loss a devoted wife, three sons, Lester of Jewell, Raymond and Milford of near Slater and two daughters, Olive of Iowa City, and Gladys, Mrs. Howard Brown of Dubuque, and six grandchildren; also three brothers, Erick of Eagle Grove, Oley of Huxley, and Nuty of Slater; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Berhow an Mrs. Nellie Elliott of Huxley and a large number of relatives and friends.
