Rev. T. R. Collins Died Saturday at Waverly Hospital
The Rev. Thomas R. Collins, 66, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic church in Waverly since Sept. 8, 1922, and a former Colo-Nevada resident, passed away Saturday night about midnight at St. Joseph's hospital in Waverly where he was taken when becoming ill Friday morning.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10 a. m. at St. Mary's church in Waverly with Archbishop Henry P. Kohlman of Dubuque, officiating at the Salem Requiem High Mass. The funeral sermon will be preached by Father Maguire, former assistant at St. Mary's church. Burial will be in the St. Mary's cemetery at Waverly.
Father Collins, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Collins, for a number of years residents of 906 L avenue, Nevada and previous to that on a farm south of Colo, was ordained to the priesthood in St. Paul, Minn. on June 12, 1906.
Following his ordination he served as assistant pastor in Decorah for a year and a half before returning to the college in Dubuque where he taught Latin and Mathematics until assuming the pastorate of the Waverly church twenty-five years ago.
As a boy Father Collins attended the rural schools of New Albany township and also the Nevada high school. He was born at Orland, Ill. coming to Story county with his parents when a young boy.
He is survived by one sister, Sister Josephita, B. V. M. who teaches in the Assumption School at Cresco.
