OBITUARY

Daniel McCarthy, son of Florence and Elizabeth McCarthy, was born in Ontario, Canada Jan. 11, 1833. When he reached his majority he left the land of his nativity an located in Jefferson county, New York.

In the winter of 1854 he came west to Iowa and located in Marshall county, where he worked at the carpenter's trade. He removed from there to Story county in April, 1856.

On the 25th of April, 1858, Mr. McCarthy was united in marriage to Mary A. Ross, daughter of James and Mary Ros of New Philadelphia, now Ontario, Iowa. Unto Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy have been born nine children, eight of whom are living: Willard F., residing in Ames; Marie, wife of H. L. Carrell of Des Moines; Emma, wife of C. G Lee of Ames; Robert H. of Ames; Mary R., wife of Frank W. Linebaugh of Boone, and Justin D. of Cedar Rapids, Andrew, the second son died at the age of 2 1/2 years.

He is also survived ty 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Of the members of his father's family two brothers and one sister survive him, Henry McCarthy of Ames, C. G. McCarthy of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Martha Read of Ames.

Mrs. McCarthy, his beloved wife, passed away Dec. 14, 1915.

Mr. McCarthy acquired his fundamental education in the district schools of Canada. After coming west and while working at the carpenter trade and farming in Iowa, he took up the study of law, which without assistance took him 12 years to master, and he admitted to the bar in 1870, remaining in active practice nearly 40 years.

After practicing alone for a number of years he entered into partnership with John L. Stevens, under the firm name of McCarthy & Stevens; later G. A. Underwood was admitted as junior partner of the firm, this partnership continued for a number of years.

He retired from the practice of law in 1895, while in partnership with C. G. Lee of Ames.

In 1873 he began the importation of horses from Europe, and for years was manager and director of the Central Iowa importing company, which discontinued business in 1893. He also served as director of the Union National bank of Ames for 30 years.

Mr. McCarthy passed away at his home on Grand avenue at 7:00 o'clock a. m., Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 17 days.
