JOSHUA BRYANT: PIONEER IS DEAD

HAD LIVED IN COMMUNITY OVER 80 YEARS--FUNERAL TUESDAY

Joshua Bryant, 86, for over 80 years a resident of Story county died at his home 1712 fifth street, Nevada late Sunday afternoon from complications incident to his advanced years.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday. There will be a prayer service at the home at 1:30 and the funeral at the Church of Christ at 2:00 with the Rev. Pence in charge. Burial will be in the family lot in the Murpher [should by Murphey] cemetery northeast of Nevada.

Joshua Bryant was the eldest son of Charles L. Bryant and America See Bryant, born in McClean county, Illinois, February 24, 1850. When he was a lad of six years, with his parent, brothers and sisters, he came to Story county, the family settling on a farm in southeast Richland township and there the homestead continued and there the family was raised.

There were four brothers and two sisters in the home of that pioneer family. The three brothers who preceded Joshua in death were George Bryant of Nevada, John Bryant of Sterling, Colo., and Sylvester Bryant of Nevada, while the sisters were Mary Bryant and Hannah, who became Mrs. Butler Pool.

He was united in marriage to Ella Pearl, January 9, 1875 and they made their home on a farm in Richland township for many years, or until retiring about 25 years ago and moving into Nevada, where the wife passed on February 17, 1919.

Joshua Bryant had lived in or near Nevada for over four score years, was a man of high character and was held in the very highest of esteem by his neighbors and friends.

Living in retirement in the family home on north Fifth street during all of those years, Mr. Bryant was recognized as a worthy citizen, had served as a member of the city council and in other positions of trust.

He was a man known for his cheery greeting and genial disposition and never missed chance to lend a helping hand where it was needed. He will be missed by a host of friends especially in the neighborhood where he was best known.

He leaves three children, Mrs. May Jackson of Belle Plaine, Mrs. Melva Wampler of Colo and Byron Bryant of Nevada with whom he had made his home for the past ten years. He also leaves 8 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

He had been failing during the past few weeks and during that time he had been tenderly cared for by his children and given every comfort possible. The children were all present at the time of his death.
