JOHN SHEARER DEAD

Collins Gazette March 27, 1919

John Shearer died very suddenly Friday at his home in Marshalltown of hemorrhage of the heart. He was in Collins Friday and went home on the train in the afternoon apparently as well as ever. The writer saw and talked with him at the depot and no one had any suspicion the end was so near.

He was raised and educated in Collins and after finishing in the high school here went to college and graduated. For a number of years he taught in the public schools of northern Iowa as principal and superintendent but receiving a more remunerative offer from an elevator firm at Rhodes, he accepted and conducted their grain business until a few months ago when he moved with his family to Marshalltown.

He was stricken down in the prime of life being in his 37th year and was a splendid specimen of American manhood.

He is the youngest son of Elias W. Shearer of Collins and leaves to mourn besides his wife and three children, his father, three brothers and two sisters.

The funeral services were conducted at Marshalltown where the sad rites were held and the funeral cortege proceeded overland to Collins where the remains were laid At Rest in the Collins cemetery Monday afternoon.

Thus in the midst of his strength and usefulness was he stricken and answered the call of the grim reaper. Thus his life ended suddenly and silently in his home. His seat will be vacant and the silver cord is broken at the fountain.
