MAUDE LOVE, 90; Proud of Ties With San Diego State

Maude (Hale) Love, who played host to many college-related events during her late husband's 19 years as president of San Diego State University, has died.

Mrs. Love, the widow of Malcolm Love, died of natural causes July 29 at St. Paul's Health Care Center. She was 90.

A native of Collins, Iowa, Mrs. Love was a student at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, when she met her husband. They were married in 1929 and moved to San Diego in 1952, building a home on Montezuma Mesa near the SDSU campus.

Malcolm Love, SDSU's fourth president, retired in 1971. He was 86 when in died in May 1990.

Mrs. Love was especially proud of her association with the Faculty Dames, an organization of spouses of SDSU faculty members that today is known as the SDSU Women's Association, said her daughter, Joan Maher.

Mrs. Love also supported charities, especially those designed to provide jobs for people willing to help themselves.

"She often gave anonymously to charities because she was a very private person who preferred the background to the limelight," her daughter said.

Mrs. Love was honored as a Salvation Army Woman of Elegance and was active in the Wednesday Club, a women's cultural and social organization.

After graduating from Simpson College, she worked as a librarian at the Universityof Iowa, where her husband received his doctoral degree.

In addition to her daughter, who lives in San Diego, Mrs. Love is survived by a brother, Harold Hale, of Collins, Iowa; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service is planned. Donations are suggested to the Malcolm A. Love Library, San Diego State University, 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92182-8050.
