ROBERT TRESSLER SUICIDED TODAY

WELL-KNOWN FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP FARMER BECAME DESPONDENT

Gilbert, July 6--Robert Tressler, 65, long-time resident of the Gilbert neighborhood, suicided by shooting himself through the head with a 38-calibre automatic, this morning about 9:00.

Despondency over ill health was the cause of his rash act, it is thought by members of the family and friends.

Other members of the family were out about the farm at the time and the only one in the house was a little granddaughter, who heard the shot and called other members of the family.

The ball had passed through his head, inflicted a mortal wound and entered the ceiling. The man lived but a few minutes after he was found by members of the family.

No inquest will be held, as it was an evident case of suicide. Mr. Tressler, a farmer 2 1/2 miles southwest of here, had lived in the community for many years and was one of the best known and highly respected citizens of the community. He leaves his wife and two children. The children are the daughter Mrs. Albert Foster of Ogden and a son Byron, who lived at home.

Tressler Funeral Held on Saturday

Gilbert, July 12--The funeral of Robert Tressler, 57, was held Saturday afternoon, July 9. There were short services at the home at 1:30 and at the Congregational church at 2:00. Rev. J. P. Himmel, pastor, was in charge of the services. A male quartet compose of Robert Clark, Clayte Manges, B. D. Kent and Mr. Staigler with Edith Anderson at the piano rendered several beautiful selections. The pallbearers were Lyman Clouser, H. W. Stafford, Chet Davis, Fred Anderson, Walter Rainbolt and George Mabie. The floral tributes were many and beautiful.

Robert Tressler was born on a farm three and one-half miles west of Story City on July 1, 1875 and passed this life to the Great Beyond on July 6, 1932, age 57 years and five days.

On Decembr 15, 1987 he was united in marriage to Miss Laurana Sawyer of Gilbert. To this union three children were born, a daughter, Merle, now Mrs. Albert Foster of Ogden, a son Byron, who is living at home with his parents and a son who died in infancy.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Tressler lived on the old home farm west of Story City for a period of 10 years, then moved to the farm they purchased at that time and now own and occupy, situated one and one-half miles southwest of Gilbert, with the exception of about five years, during which time they lived in Gilbert, when Mr. Tressler was manager of the local shipping association. They lived on this farm improving it until it stands as a creditable monument to Mr. and Mrs. Tressler and their children's hard work and conservation to home life and home building.

When a young man Robert united as an active member of the Evangelical association which at that time held services in what we know as Center school house in Lafayette township.

On moving to Gilbert he with his family joined the Congregational church and have membership and given loyal support to the present time.

About 10 years ago his physical health began to fail, the affliction being rheumatism and arthritis. He spent much time and money for treatments in the best sanitariums and by expert physicians. These years have been characterized by heroic battling against these destructive elements in nature that insidiously attack ones physical vitality drained by hard work and exposure demanded in building a farm, a home and a community, all in all blessing mankind.

During these years of discouragement to an active and energetic man, Mr. Tressler proved his qualities to endure hardships. His spirit was kept up to battle manly on in the hope of the conquest of health, by devotion, sacrifice and love of his wife who exemplified the virtues, sacrifice and devotion of Christian womanhood.
