Final Rites Held Here for Late J. E. Townsend

Memorial service for J. E. Townsend, 65, who died in a fire at his home Tuesday night, were held at the Bishop Funeral home Friday afternoon with Rev. C. E. Lookingbill in charge. Two songs "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Good Night Here, Good Morning There" were sung by Charles Handsaker, with Mrs. C. L. Gifford at the piano.

The daughter Mrs. T. G. Wilson, the son Ray of Maxwell and other near relatives were here for the service but the son Floyd of Oklahoma City was unable to be here.

Other relatives and friends from out of the city were here were Mrs. Parley Eaton, Mrs. Will Reeser, Mrs. Glen Crawford and Mrs. Harold Kithcoat of Newton; Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Bunett and Mrs. O. F. Englong and son Nathan of Belle Plaine; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Townsend, Kenneth Townsend and Will Townsend of Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Townsend and Mr. and Mrs. McVoy and children of Center Point; Mr. George Townsend of State Center, Mr. and Mrs. John Huntrod of Collins and Miss Maxine Townsend of Des Moines.

"Jesse Edward Townsend was born May 17, 1873 in Linn county, Iowa, and met death January 31, 1939, at the age of 65 years, 8 months and fourteen days.

One of a family of seven children, his boyhood and early manhood were spent in Linn county.

He was united in marriage to Henrietta Jordan, February --, 1898 in Emmett county, Iowa. His wife preceded him in 1932.

Five years of early marriage were spent on a farm near Hillsboro, Wisconsin. Taking up residence in Nevada in 1905, he began to work for the Northwestern railway company as section hand. Transferred to State Center in 1908 as section foreman, he lived there until 1915, moving from there to a farm near Maxwell where he remained until 1920. He again moved to Nevada and took up his work with the railway company in 1923, at which work he continued until retired on pension in September 1937.

Three children and seven grandchildren survive. The children are Mrs. T. G. Wilson, 1236 Ninth street, Nevada; Floyd R. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Ray R. of near Nevada. The eldest son, Charles B., World War veteran, passed away in April 1921.

The grandchildren are Maxine Townsend of Des Moines, Dean Wilson of Nevada, Charles Lee and Faye Maxine Townsend of Oklahoma City and Marilyn Audrey and Donna Rae of near Nevada. Two brothers also survive, Joe of Cheyenne, Wyoming an Ralph of Centerpoint, Iowa.
