LAST CIVIL WAR VETERAN IS DEAD
ASA WHITE OF MAXWELL PASSED AWAY AFTER ILLNESS OF WEEKS
Special to the Journal.
Maxwell, April 23--Asa White, 88, last Civil War veteran of the Maxwell neighborhood, answered to "taps" today at 9:00 a. m. and the funeral services will be held at the Church of Christ in Maxwell, Monday afternoon, with Rev. DeLos Markham of Des Moines in charge.Mr. White had been a resident of the Maxwell community for over half a century and leaves his wife and six children. They are Lemuel R. White of LaCrosse, Wis., Francis M. White of Maxwell, Mrs. Ole Sabo of Maxwell, Mrs. George Mather of Sioux City, Mrs. Will Matteson of Rolfe and Mrs. Joe Hardenbrook of St. Cloud, Minn.
Mr. White is the last of a large group of Civil war veterans who lived in and around Maxwell, but who have answered to "taps" year by year, until now all are gone.
He had been ill for several weeks at his home here.
