JOHN MONAHAN DIED EARLY TODAY

HAD BEEN SUFFERER FOR MONTHS; WAS NATIVE OF STORY COUNTY

John Monahan, 72, died at his home at 734 Third street at 6:45 this morning, after a lingering illness which kept him confined to his home for two months or more.

The deceased had been suffering from troubles of a cancerous nature and a trip to the Mayo clinic at Rochester some months ago revealed that there was no hope for his recovery.

The funeral services of Mr. Monahan will be held Thursday morning at nine o'clock at St. Patrick's church, in charge of the Rev. Fr. M. Nichols. Interment will be in St. Patrick's cemetery.

Mr. Monahan was a native of Story county, having been born, a son of Thomas and Margaret Monahan, pioneers, on the homestead in northwest Union township. He had lived in the county all of his life, first as a farmer and later as a resident of Nevada.

He leaves two sister, Mrs. Dave Hopkins of Colo and Mrs. Margaret McCollister [should be McAllister]-- the later now lying near death in the same home in which he died. During the last weeks they had been cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Brown, the latter a sister of the late Sidney McCollister [should be McAllister], who had been raised in the Monahan home.

One sister, Mrs. Kate Yeager died at Rockford, Ill., about 12 years ago, another Miss Susan Monahan died about 17 years ago while a fourth sister, Mrs. Quinn died at Defiance, Iowa.

There was also a brother Laurence Monahan whose whereabouts have been unknown for years.
