OBITUARY
(Excerpted from RHODES NEWS column of the State Center Enterprise, State Center, IA Thursday Feb 10, 1938.)
Howard Hale, former mayor of Rhodes, died at his home at 7 o'clock Friday morning (February 4) following an illness of a malignant disease. Mr. Hale was elected mayor in 1935 and tendered his resignation to the town council only a month ago because of failing health and W.H. Beard, was elected by the council to complete his term.
He was born in Cook County, Illinois, October 10, 1860. A son of Anthony and Jane Hale. He came with his parents to Story County, Iowa when he was 10 years of age. He married Miss Etta Marsh, in February 1884 (sic actually October 15, 1884). They lived in Story Coounty and moved to Hamilton County near Blairsburg where they lived twenty five years. His wife and one small son Earl, preceded him in death. On October 21, 1921 he married Mrs. Clara Emery, of Rhodes, who survives. They have lived in Rhodes since their marriage.
He is survived by three sons, Arthur of Maxwell; Truman of Ellsworth; Millard of Morgan Hills, California; Mrs. Ruth Williamson, of Pasadena, Calif; and Mrs. Myrtle Burton and Miss Rachel Hale of Los Angeles, Calif., and twelve grandchildren. One brother, James (E.) Hale of Collins, two stepdaughters Mrs. Creta Owens and Mrs. Carri DeReuse, of Valeria and one stepson, Clifford Emery of Colfax. One sister, Mrs. Alice Day, died at Blairsburg in 1929.
Funeral services were held from the M.E. Church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in charge of Rev. C.A. Crouse.
Pallbears were five souncilmen; W.W. Burgoyne, A.F. Pike, Fred Cheville, Lester Tribby, Russell Buck and street commissioner, A.H. Crawford. Interment was in Eden Cemetery.
