Former Slater Man Passed Away

Special to the Journal.
Slater, Aug. 8--Joseph L. Johnson, age 52, a former resident of Slater and Kelley, died Saturday at Broadlawn's hospital in Des Moines after a brief illness from complications of the heart and was brought to Slater for burial Monday.

Funeral services were held at the Lincoln church at 2:00 o'clock in charge of Rev. Peter Buland of Cambridge. The duet "Does Jesus Care" was sung by Mrs. Roy Elliott and Miss Irene Berhow of Huxley, accompanied by Miss Jeanetta Larson also of Huxley. Miss Margaret Fritz sang "Behold a Host" a duet, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" was sung by Mrs. G. J. Cleveland and Orval Sharpe.

Joseph L. Johnson was born February 8, 1881 at Sheldahl and died at Broadlawn's hospital in Des Moines, August 4, at the age of 52 years, 5 months and 26 days. His parents were Oliver and Alice Johnson. He attended the Slater schools and was a graduate of the State Teachers college at Cedar Falls and of Springfield. His marriage to Miss Nettie Fritz took place in September 1909. Two children, Margaret and Stanley were born to this union. His wife died November 19, 1919 at their home in Kelley. His second marriage took place July 22, 1921 to Miss Rachel Sharpe. One son, Joseph Jr, blessed this union. They have made their home in Des Moines for a number of years.

He is survived by his wife and son Joseph Jr. of Des Moines, son Stanley of Washington and daughter Miss Margaret of St. Paul, his mother, Mrs. Alice Johnson of Roland, a sister Mrs. Rebecca White of Portland, Ore. and a brother, Martin Johnson of Des Moines besides numerous relatives and friends. Burial was made in the Slater cemetery.
