Obituary of Ella Woods

CAMBRIDGE -- Ella Aline Thompson, daughter of Jane H. and William A. Thompson was born on May 27, 1871 at Dunkirk, Wisconsin. She was one of a family of seven children.

When a small child her family moved to a farm near Cambridge, Iowa, where she spent her childhood. Later the family moved to Grimes, Iowa. There she was married to L. D. Woods. They started their married life in the village of Tyner, where they owned and operated a general store. After a few years they moved to Cambridge where both of them were actively engaged in a friendly mercantile business, until the time of Mr. Woods' death in 1938.

One child, Ruth, was born to them, but she lived only a few days.

Mrs. Woods was received into the membership of the Cambridge Methodist church in the year of 1913, where she maintained a loyal and active place in the church as long as her health permitted her to do so.

She was a cheerful, kind and loving wife, neighbor and friend. Never did she pass an opportunity to do a kindness. Little children were her special favorites. They did not leave the store without some candy, or a pat from her hand and with a gracious smile.

Mrs. Woods had been in ill health for several years and died at the Grayson Nursing home in Des Moines on Saturday, September 22, 1951.

She leaves one sister, Mrs. C. S. Kent of Cambridge and two brothers, Elbert Allen Thompson of Cambridge, Iowa and Harry Raymond Thompson of Rolfe, Iowa. Also she will be greatly missed among her several nephews, nieces, other relatives, and many friends.

Funeral services were held in the Cambridge Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 25, 1951 at 2 o'clock conducted by the pastor, the Rev. John F. Rex. Interment was made in the White Oak cemetery.

"Going Down the Valley" and "Beyond the Sunset" were sung by a mixed quartette composed of Kermit Griffith, Mrs. Guy DeHoet, Mrs. Roy Gil and Earl Gardner, accompanied by Mrs. John Dyer on the piano.

Casket bearers were Harry Cairns, A. N. Dahl, W. E. Hawks, L. O. Langland, John Lee, and Joe Seversike. Flower arrangements, Mrs. Harry Cairns.
