Services for area deaths
MRS. MARY HANDSAKER
Mrs. Thomas (Mary) Handsaker, age 87, died in her of north of Colo Tuesday, Nov 13.
Services will be Friday, Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. from the United Methodist Church in Colo with Rev. James Louk officiating. Burial will be in the cemetery in Hampton.
She was born July 8, 1897 in Hampton, the daughter of James and Margaret Sheets. She graduated from Hampton High School in 1916, receiced her B.A. degree from Iowa State College in 1930, followed by graduate work at State University in Missouri, a state college in Kirksville and Drake University. She taught for 33 years, teaching primary grades at Lawton, Cedar Rapids, Monticello, Vail, and Cedar Falls. She served for four years as critic teacher in Dickenson.
The last nine of her teaching years were spent in Cedar Falls as principal of Humbert School. In 1935 she married Charles E. Elmquist of Mason City. He passed away in 1945 and in 1956 she married Thomas L. Handsaker of Colo.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Colo and as a young girl served her church by teaching Sunday school and Bible school an working in women's societies.
In 1964, Mr. and Mrs. Handsaker took a trip around the world, visiting 14 different countries.
She is survived by her husband and one sister, Miss Myrtle Sheets of Hampton and five step-children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother James of Hampton and one step-son.
The body is at the Brouhard Funeral Home in Zearing.
