THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, May 5, 1927, page 1. "JOHN RAY BURIED SUNDAY - John Ray, 75, a pioneer son of Indian Creek township and for many years a resident of Maxwell, died at his home here Friday morning. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. B. H. Guthrie, pastor, were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon. Rev. W. S. Kight, pastor of the local Methodist church, assisted with the services and the young men's double quartet of the Presbyterian church furnished the music. Interment was in the family lot in Evergreen** cemetery at Iowa Center. John Ray was born in Marion county, Indiana, June 27, 1851, and died at his home in Maxwell, April 29, 1927. He was the son of Judiah and Clara Ray. Four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death, and one sister, Clara Kutrz, survive him. He was married February 15, 1872, to Mary Katherine McCord, who preceded him in death July 25, 1903. He was again married May 23, 1919, to Nancy White, who survives him. To this first union six children were born, namely: Will Ray, who preceded him in death February 25, 1921; Fred Ray, Rosa Gamble, Dwight Ray, Blanche Powers and Mabel Gamble. All of whom with fourteen grand children and two great grandchildren remain to mourn his departure. He lived his entire life in Indian Creek township and was always known as an honest and upright man, a kind father and a loving husband.
