Carrie Mabel Beal was born to Urias and Lydia Beal near Maxwell, Iowa, Oct. 8, 1887, and passed away at her home in Colo, April 2, 1945, at the age of 57 years, 5 months and 24 days. She grew to womanhood in Story County, living near Maxwell, Fernald and Colo. She was united in marriage to W. S. Hostettler, Feb. 16, 1910, who passed away in August, 1939. Three children blessed this home, Ray W., Marjorie Mae, and Doris Ruth, who died in infancy. She united with the Church of the Brethren at Maxwell, at an early age and kept her faith until her passing. She was a very active worker in her community, always willing to give a helping hand whenever needed, especially in caring for the sick and needy. Her happiest hours were those spent among the children and young people. She was a friend to all, and they knew her as "Sis." They moved to Colo in the fall of 1938.
She and her husband were school bus drivers for twelve years and after his death she carried on for six years. In her home she cared for many children. One was Richard Browning, whom she mothered from 20 months of age to his early teens, thus becoming his other mother.
To mourn her loss are one son, Roy of Colo, one daughter, Mrs. Harold Baker of Nevada, two grandchildren, Dean and Karen Hostettler, one brother, Ray E. Beal of Maxwell, and two sisters, Mrs. R. Z. Brown of Maxwell and Mrs. Bert Lind of Nevada, and a host of relatives and friends. Her untimely passing was a shock to the community and she will be greatly missed by all.
