Giles Randlett,** former resident of this vicinity, who for the past 18 years has been living near Summersville, Mo., died at his home Friday evening, March 4th, after an illness of several months. THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, March 17, 1921, page 1, column 5. "GILES RANDLET. - Giles Randlet, one time resident of Indian Creek township, father of Mrs. Dan Smith and Mrs. Jas. Woodward, and grandfather of Mrs. Harlan Pearson, passed away at his home near Summersville, Missouri, after several months illness. The following notice of his death and funeral appeared in the Summersville Leader of last week: The Leader regretfully records this week the death of one of our good old friends and Civil war veterans, Giles Randlet. We had known Mr. Randlet for some time and always found him a most honorable man. Giles Randlet was born in West Chazy, Clinton county, New York, in the year 1845. He was united in marriage to Delphine Bassett, of Moores, New York, on the 14th day of April, 1866. In the year 1867 they moved to Iowa, where they lived for forty years. To this union four children were born: Mary J., Phoebe E., Cordelia L. and George W., all of whom survive him, together with an adopted son, Fred D. All were present at the funeral except the daughter, Mary. About 14 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Randlet came to Texas county, Missouri, where they have since made their home. Giles Randlet served four years in the union army and was honorably discharged from the service of the United States the 6th day of February, 1866, at City Point, Va. He passed away at his home near Summersville, the 4th day of March, 1921. At the home the Baptist choir sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Nearer My God to Thee," followed by prayer. A short funeral service was conducted at the cemetery by Rev. Hiram Craig, taking his text from the 14th chapter of Job. The choir sang "Abide With Me" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." The body was laid to rest March the 6th in the Bethel cemetery in Spring Valley. He was a king husband, a loving father, a good neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand. This being the first death in the family, he leaves to mourn his aged wife and five children. "Sunset and evening star and one clear call for me; …. (two poems by very blurry print)."
